“It’s going to be okay,” I said, looking over at Leah as I handed her a bottle of water. It had been a few minutes since we had walked into her apartment, since we saw the now familiar words etched across her living room wall. In that time, I tried to keep the woman calm. After all, she was pregnant and living on her own. The idea of someone breaking into her apartment was understandably jarring. The idea that the person doing it wrote the name of a man who just so happened to run into her in the hallway was downright crazy. In fact, before the police showed up and started looking around and asking questions, she wouldn’t really go near me. She thought I was somehow responsible for this, like I’d broken into her home, defaced it, and then waited for her to get back so that I could see her face when I manipulated her into letting me in. I couldn’t blame her for thinking that, of course. That didn’t make it true, though, and thankfully, since the police had shown up and started asking me questions—questions that I could answer honestly with proof—Leah started to understand that I was as much in the dark about this as she was.

“I just don’t understand how this could have happened,” Leah said, taking the water from me and sipping it lightly. She didn’t look at me. In fact, to someone on the outside, it might not have even been evident that she was talking to me. It probably seemed like she was speaking to someone through an Air pod or other wireless contraption. Her gaze was that intent on the kitchen counter ahead of her. “How could it be your name? I didn’t even know you. I mean, I don’t even know you, but I hadn’t even met you then. How could someone know that I would run into you right before I walked into my apartment?”

“I don’t think that’s what they thought,” I admitted, taking a deep breath and looking at the police officers who now swarmed Leah’s apartment. “I think that whoever did this wanted someone close to Mia to get this message. I think they wanted it to get back to me, and I’m guessing you’re the closest thing Mia has to a friend in this building.”

“We are friends,” she said, finally looking at me. “I mean, we’re not braiding each other’s hair and swapping personal stories, but we’re definitely friends.”

“Of course you are.” I nodded affirmingly. “That’s probably why whoever did this picked you. They wanted to make sure that this message was connected to Mia, and that I saw it.”

“Because you’re Lucky John?” she asked, even though we’d been through this before.

“I am,” I answered.

“And you’re the boyfriend who died? Only, you didn’t actually die. You were just taken by the Witness Protection program?”

“Right,” I replied.

“And you came back, and Mia was married, but she didn’t tell you she was married, and now she’s gone?” Leah asked, sighing loudly.
